Gregory M. Smith
Greg Smith is a partner in the Intellectual Property Department of Wildman Harrold. He has substantial experience in various aspects of patent and trademark law, including: patent and trademark litigation; preparation and prosecution of US and foreign patent applications; prosecution of US and foreign trademark applications; preparation of patent and trademark opinions such as non-infringement, invalidity, and trademark availability opinions; drafting and review of IP transactional documents; and Intellectual Property due diligence reviews. Greg is also a mechanical engineer and obtained practical experience in the mechanical, electrical, and acoustical fields while working for six years as a Senior Quality Engineer at Shure Inc. in Evanston, IL.Representative Experience:
Patents
- Represents clients in the procurement and prosecution of US and foreign patents and the preparation of patentability, non-infringement, and invalidity opinions. Has done work in a variety of arts including pneumatic precision finishing tools, motors, and spindles; hand tools; pneumatic system components; sporting good equipment; aircraft and spacecraft parts and systems; computer systems and programs; nanotechnology; small appliances; automotive interiors; flooring; computer network equipment; network cable management; household cleaning products; and traffic bollards.
- Counsels clients in the drafting and review of patent related transactional documents, such as licensing agreements and assignments, and works with clients to perform due diligence reviews for possible IP asset purchases or corporate mergers.
Intellectual Property Litigation
- Represents an electronic signature service provider in a patent infringement involving electronic signature systems and software.
- Represented a patent owner in multiple patent infringement lawsuits involving interactive fuel pump technologies.
- Represented a major brand beverage distributor in a patent infringement lawsuit involving electronic locking mechanisms for vending machines.
- Represented a pneumatic tool manufacturer in a patent infringement lawsuit in the S.D. Fl. involving hand-held pneumatic tools.
- Represented a major health club franchise owner in a trademark infringement lawsuit in the N.D. Ill.

- Represents clients in the procurement and prosecution of US and foreign trademarks.
- Represents clients in the preparation of trademark availability and infringement opinions.
